SSC JE Exam Pattern 2026: A Quick Overview

It's best to learn the structure of the exam before you start talking about topics. There are two stages of SSC JE wherein both the tests are conducted via computer-based test (CBT):

Paper I (CBT 1): 200 questions for 200 marks in 2 hours. This is a qualifying stage and is only included to shortlist candidates for Paper II.

Paper II (CBT 2): 100 questions for 300 marks – this paper actually determines your merit and selection.

Negative marking is used in both papers (0.25 marks for each incorrect answer in paper 1, 1 mark for each in paper 2). Candidates with scribes receive an additional 20 minutes per paper.

SSC JE Syllabus 2026: Paper I

All the engineering streams have paper 1 of the same pattern, which is divided into three sections: General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, General Engineering (Technical of your choice). This is what you'll find in each section.

1. General Intelligence and Reasoning

This section assesses logical and analytical abilities instead of engineering knowledge and is a scoring area when done properly. Expect questions on:

• Analogies, similarities and differences

• Space visualization and spatial orientation

• Problem-solving, analysis, judgment and decision-making

• Visual memory, discrimination and observation

• Relationship concepts, arithmetic reasoning, verbal-figure classification

• Blood relations, Direction sense, Coding Decoding, and series completion

• Non-verbal series, figure based puzzles

• This section is quick to attempt without any long calculation, which is why many toppers suggest trying this section as speedily as possible to be able to save time for the technical section.

2. General Awareness

This part checks your knowledge of current affairs and static general knowledge. Key areas include:

• Indian History, Geography, Culture and Polity

• Scientific research and general science

• Current national and international events (particularly last six months)

• Economics and general topics relevant to India

This is a section where there is no mathematics, so it's another part of the test in which the speed and the amount of prior reading are what makes the difference in getting the right answers.

3. General Engineering (Stream-Specific)

This is the technical strength of Paper I and usually consists of 100 questions (subject to vary based on the selected paper branch). The disciplines differ in the topics:

• Civil Engineering includes Building Materials, Surveying, Soil Mechanics, Estimating & Costing, Concrete Technology, and Structural Engineering ( RCC and Steel Structures).

• Electrical Engineering includes Basic Concepts, Circuit Law, Magnetic Circuits, AC Fundamentals, Measurement and Measuring Instruments, Electrical Machines, and Synchronous Machines.

• Mechanical Engineering includes Theory of Machines, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, IC Engines, Production Engineering and Strength of Materials.

In addition to these three major streams, this year's notification also contains Computer Science & Information Technology, Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, and Physics as additional streams for candidates applying for posts of Scientific Assistant (IMD) and Junior Engineer (Telecom).

SSC JE Syllabus 2026: Paper II

Paper II contains all the technical questions and is specific to your field of engineering. This paper is worth 300 marks and will make up the majority of your preparation time in the later stages, so it is worth spending more time on this paper to ensure you are the best person to take the exam.

• Civil & Structural Engineering (Paper II) explores topics in greater detail including Building Materials, Estimating and Costing & Valuation, Surveying, Soil Mechanics, Hydraulics, Irrigation Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Environmental Engineering.

• Electrical Engineering (Paper II) builds upon the Basic Concepts, Circuit Law, Magnetic Circuit, AC Fundamentals, Measurement and Measuring Instruments, Generation, Transmission and Distribution, and Utilization and Electrical Energy.

• Mechanical Engineering (Paper II) builds upon Theory of Machines and Machine Design, Engineering Mechanics and Strength of Materials, Thermal Engineering (Properties of Pure Substances, IC Engine Performance, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning), and Fluid Mechanics.

Candidates should focus on using Paper II as a deciding factor and spend more revision cycles on the numerical problems, formula-based questions and previous year cut-off trends by branch.

How to Approach SSC JE Syllabus Preparation

Here are some tips for a better approach towards studying the SSC JE syllabus:

• Download the official syllabus PDF from the SSC website and use it as a checklist rather than relying only on summaries, so you don't miss niche topics.

• Focus on your technical paper as it is of high weightage across both papers and is really the only thing that can make you stand out in the merit list.

• Do not take general awareness and reasoning in Paper 1 lightly — it is qualifying, so if you perform poorly, it can eliminate you even before you reach the score you need in Paper 2.

• Practice past year papers to know the level of difficulty, topics and the time management for 200 questions in 2 hours.

• Revise formula-heavy chapters like Strength of Materials, Circuit Law, and Thermodynamics closer to the exam, since these are easy to forget without repetition.

Ensure that the application and fee deadlines are noted, as even a completed application with a missed fee payment date may be rejected.

Why the SSC JE Exam Is Worth the Effort

The SSC JE pay matrix level for the posts are 7th CPC Pay Matrix Level 6, Pay scale is 35400-112400. The in-hand salary of the fresher is approximately ranging from Rs. 44000 per month to Rs. 52000 per month in the city of posting and applicable allowances. In addition to the salary, selected candidates receive medical benefits, Leave Travel Concession (LTC), gratuity and pension benefits under the National Pension System (NPS) — making this a truly attractive career option for engineering graduates and diploma holders in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical streams.
